Shingles Vaccination
Shingles is caused by the reactivation of the varicella-zoster virus (the same virus that causes chickenpox). It typically causes a painful, blistering rash that can last for weeks. In some cases, the pain can persist for months or years after the rash has healed, a condition known as post-herpetic neuralgia. The shingles vaccine significantly reduces your risk of developing shingles and can lessen the severity if you do get it.
Who Should Get the Shingles Vaccine?
The shingles vaccine is recommended for:
- Adults aged 50 and over
- People with weakened immune systems who are at higher risk
- Anyone who has had shingles before and wants to reduce the risk of recurrence
About the Vaccine
The Shingrix vaccine is the preferred shingles vaccine, offering strong and long-lasting protection.
- Given as 2 doses, 2-6 months apart
- Each dose is an injection in the upper arm
- Over 90% effective at preventing shingles
- Side effects are usually mild: soreness at the injection site, muscle pain, fatigue, mild fever
