MenACWY Vaccination
Meningococcal disease is a serious bacterial infection that can cause meningitis and septicaemia (blood poisoning). The MenACWY vaccine protects against four groups of meningococcal bacteria: A, C, W, and Y. Our pharmacy offers private MenACWY vaccination for travellers, students, and anyone who wants additional protection.
Who Should Get the MenACWY Vaccine?
The vaccine is particularly recommended for:
- Students heading to university, especially if living in shared accommodation
- Travellers visiting countries where meningococcal disease is more common, particularly sub-Saharan Africa
- Pilgrims travelling to Saudi Arabia for Hajj or Umrah (a requirement for visa applications)
- Anyone who missed the NHS-funded vaccine at school
- People with certain medical conditions that increase their risk
About the Vaccine
The MenACWY vaccine is a single injection that provides protection against all four groups.
- Given as a single dose in the upper arm
- Protection develops within 7-10 days
- Side effects are usually mild: soreness at the injection site, slight headache, or mild fever
- A booster may be needed for ongoing risk, such as repeated travel to high-risk areas
