Altitude Sickness Prevention
If you are planning a trip to high-altitude destinations such as trekking in the Himalayas, climbing Kilimanjaro, or visiting cities like Cusco or La Paz, altitude sickness is a real risk. Our pharmacy service provides prescription medication and expert advice to help you prepare safely. Altitude sickness, also known as acute mountain sickness (AMS), occurs when your body struggles to adjust to lower oxygen levels at high elevations. Symptoms can range from mild headaches to life-threatening conditions if left untreated.
How the Service Works
Getting altitude sickness prevention through our pharmacy is straightforward.
- Book a phone consultation through our website
- Discuss your travel plans, medical history, and fitness level with a pharmacist
- If suitable, receive a prescription for acetazolamide (Diamox) or alternative medication
- Receive advice on acclimatisation strategies and recognising symptoms
About Acetazolamide (Diamox)
Acetazolamide is the most commonly prescribed medication for altitude sickness prevention. It works by helping your body acclimatise faster to reduced oxygen levels at altitude.
- Usually started 1-2 days before ascending to high altitude
- Taken twice daily during ascent and for 48 hours after reaching the highest point
- Common side effects include tingling in fingers and toes, increased urination, and altered taste
- Not suitable for people with sulfonamide allergies or certain kidney conditions
Prevention Tips
Medication alone is not a substitute for sensible acclimatisation. Our pharmacists will also advise on:
- Ascending gradually and allowing rest days
- Staying well hydrated
- Avoiding alcohol and heavy meals at altitude
- Recognising warning signs that require descent or medical attention
