- Atovaquone/Proguanil (Malarone) - taken daily, starting 1-2 days before travel
- Doxycycline - taken daily, starting 1-2 days before travel, affordable option
- Mefloquine (Lariam) - taken weekly, starting 2-3 weeks before travel
- Your pharmacist will recommend the best option for your trip
Bite Prevention
Antimalarials should always be combined with bite prevention measures.
- Use insect repellent containing DEET (at least 50%)
- Wear long sleeves and trousers in the evening
- Sleep under an insecticide-treated mosquito net
- Use air conditioning or window screens where possible
