    About the Vaccine

    There are two types of pneumococcal vaccine available.

    • PCV13 (Prevenar 13) - protects against 13 strains of pneumococcal bacteria
    • PPV23 (Pneumovax) - protects against 23 strains and is recommended for adults at risk
    • Given as a single injection in the upper arm
    • Side effects are usually mild: soreness at the injection site, mild fever
