Pertussis (Whooping Cough) Vaccination
Whooping cough (pertussis) is a highly contagious bacterial infection that causes prolonged bouts of coughing and can be particularly dangerous for young babies. Vaccination is the most effective way to protect yourself and those around you. Our pharmacy offers private pertussis vaccination for adults, including pregnant women who may have missed the NHS-funded vaccine during pregnancy.
Who Should Get the Pertussis Vaccine?
The pertussis vaccine is recommended for:
- Pregnant women (ideally between 16-32 weeks) to pass protection to their baby before birth
- New parents, grandparents, and close contacts of newborns
- Healthcare and childcare workers
- Anyone wanting a booster to maintain protection
- Adults who have not been vaccinated against pertussis in recent years

The pertussis vaccine is given as a combined vaccine (usually Boostrix) that also protects against diphtheria and tetanus.

- Protection develops within about 2 weeks
- Side effects are usually mild: soreness at the injection site, mild headache, or slight fever
