What Is Pharmacy First?
Pharmacy First is an NHS England service that allows community pharmacists to assess and treat patients for seven common health conditions without the need for a GP appointment. Launched to improve access to healthcare and reduce pressure on GP surgeries, the scheme means you can walk into a participating pharmacy and receive clinical advice, and in many cases, prescription-strength medication on the spot. It is free of charge for eligible patients, just like a visit to your doctor.
The Seven Conditions We Can Treat
Under Pharmacy First, our pharmacists can assess and provide treatment for sinusitis, sore throat, earache, infected insect bites, impetigo, shingles, and uncomplicated urinary tract infections in women. For each of these conditions, our pharmacists follow NHS clinical pathways to assess your symptoms, determine the right course of treatment, and supply appropriate medication including antibiotics where clinically necessary. If your symptoms suggest something more serious, we will refer you to your GP or another appropriate healthcare service.
Benefits of Using Pharmacy First
The biggest advantage of Pharmacy First is convenience. There is no need to wait days or weeks for a GP appointment when your local pharmacist can help you straight away. Most pharmacies are open longer hours than GP surgeries, including evenings and weekends, making it easier to get treatment when you need it. You do not need to book an appointment in most cases, simply walk in and speak to the pharmacist. It also frees up GP time for patients with more complex health needs.
How to Access Pharmacy First at Nexus
Visiting a Nexus Pharmacy for Pharmacy First is straightforward. Simply walk into any of our participating branches in England and let the team know you would like to use the service. Our pharmacist will take you to a private consultation room to discuss your symptoms confidentially. You will need to bring your NHS number or provide your date of birth and address so we can verify your eligibility. The whole process typically takes around 10 to 15 minutes, and you will leave with the treatment you need.
Wales: Common Ailments Service
If you are visiting one of our Welsh branches, a similar service is available through the Common Ailments Service. This NHS Wales programme allows pharmacists to assess and treat a broader range of minor conditions, from hay fever and cold sores to back pain and threadworms. Like Pharmacy First in England, this service is free for eligible patients and helps you get quick access to healthcare advice and treatment without visiting your GP. Ask at your local Nexus branch for more details.
